Reflections from YANG

My EP “YANG” is finally out, 4 years after I first started piecing it together. The oldest song on the album is from 2019. I’m not sure why it took this long. I realized I had been waiting for some stroke of luck. Some windfall of change, or some moment when I would finally feel ready. But I don’t want to live my life like that anymore, on the starting lines. I’d always been waiting til I felt that I was in a place financially to be able to do it justice, to promote it, and to make the accompanying experiences, such as music videos and shows. But I really can’t predict how my life is going to look, and I’m tired of waiting on myself while my music just passes me by.
YANG is a dedication to taking life into your own hands, and I think it’s very fitting that I did decide to release it in this way. I released it on the platform, EVEN, a week before my birthday, when it then went to the typical streaming services. I had been off of social media for 6 months, been using a dumb phone as my daily communication device, and hiding away at a day job in the airline industry. I finally woke up one day and realized nobody is coming to get me but myself. I want to be able to share my music in real time, flaws and all, and work through the process with my listeners. So I decided to just put it out, no promo, and bare it all.
To me, this EP symbolizes a rebirth. YANG is the energy of the sun, the masculine, the power of doing and becoming. These songs narrate a time in my life when I went from being tormented by regret of what could’ve been, to realizing I had the power to change the course of my life and become that woman I truly wanted to be. It’s a story of self-discovery and self-worth. It’s a story of gratitude for having loved, and knowing that love is never really lost.
I could say more about what this album means to me, but I really want you to just listen to it. I hope it heals you the way it did for me. I hope you see yourself in my reflection, and realize that you too are in charge of your own life, and that love surrounds us.
